🎬 Film Recommendation: Deep Cover

A film tip from Expat Improv: Deep Cover

Yesterday, during our weekend improv workshop lunch break, Jos – one of our course participants – recommended this film to me. I ended up watching it that very evening after class on Prime Video. And what can I say? An absolute hit for all fans of improv!

In Deep Cover, a burned-out improv teacher is recruited as an undercover agent – and uses spontaneous theatre skills to navigate London's criminal underworld with her chaotic team. Between drug deals, disguises and shifting roles, a lot of it feels suspiciously like our scene exercises (just with more gangsters and less applause).

Why we at Expat Improv recommend this film:

Because it shows – in a fun, clever and creative way – how powerful improv can be. And maybe, just maybe, we see a tiny bit of ourselves in it. :)

🎭 The Cast

Bryce Dallas Howard plays Kat Boyles, an overwhelmed improv teacher who suddenly finds herself in a real-life covert operation. Her role balances self-doubt and improvisational strength – believable, relatable and laced with dry humour.

Orlando Bloom stars as Marlon Swift, a narcissistic method actor who turns every undercover mission into an improvised theatre piece. Bloom is delightfully over-the-top – in the best way.

Nick Mohammed as Hugh brings the emotional core of the story: a quiet, nerdy IT guy who grows far beyond himself through the power of improv. His awkwardness is both funny and endearing.

Sean Bean plays Detective Sergeant Billings, adding real gravity to the story. His screen time is short but intense.

Thanks, Jos, for the fantastic recommendation! 🙌

Warm regards,
Albert Schimmel
